Book Week 2011 - HKA Read-A-Thon
Zak the Yak wants you to read...to give others the chance to read
Our goal for the 2011 Read-A-Thon is to raise money to create a library for a Room To Read school in Asia, and to sponsor the ten year education of 4 girls who would not ordinarily receive an education. This requires us all to read and get sponsored to read!
The 2010 Read-a-thon raised HK$98,899 which has provided over 10,000 local language books to Room To Read schools in Asia and Africa. G2EH lead the way with 100% of students participating in the read-a-thon, and 17 students read a total of 240 books! Let’s aim for 100% participation from the whole school in 2011.
The HKA Read-A-Thon promotes ‘Students Helping Students” initiatives, fostering the ideas of cultural awareness, social entrepreneurship and global philanthropy in the hearts and minds of children in the developed world. Students will learn and grow through reading, while at the same time raising money to provide resources for children in the developing world, so they may learn and grow as well.
Room to Read‘s mission is to partner with local communities throughout the developing world to provide quality educational opportunities by establishing libraries, creating local language children’s literature, constructing schools and providing education to girls. Since their inception in 2000, Room to Read has impacted the lives of over 5 million children by:
- Constructing 1,442 Schools
- Establishing over 11,246 libraries
- Publishing 550 new local language children’s titles representing over 9.4 million books in 25 languages
- Funding 10,590 long-term girls’ scholarships
