Buddies
We had a great time with our buddies today, teaching them some new games on the HKA rooftop. The weather was absolutely perfect and our buddies learned about four square, basketball and much more.
It was great to meet all of the parents over the last two days, sharing the successes the students have had and setting new goals for the rest of the year. It would be great if the parents could add a comment to their child's PTSC blog post, reflecting on the meeting and how they will support them achieving any of their goals.

Over the next three weeks we are taking part in a read-a-thon. I look forward to hearing about all of the great stories that have been read by the end of the week and sponsoring some readers! PTSC Over the next two days is our parent, teacher, student conferences. I look forward to welcoming all of the students with their parents over the next two days and looking at improvements the students have made over the last few months. Research Activities Over the next two days everyone will be focusing on Exhibition research. Mrs Hand presented some online resources that we can access and all students will be taking home a book to research. We will be trying to coordinate this onto our wikis. From the Library: Book Week 2011 - HKA Read-A-Thon Zak the Yak wants you to read...to give others the chance to read Our goal for the 2011 Read-A-Thon is to raise money to create a library for a Room To Read school in Asia, and to sponsor the ten year education of 4 girls who would not ordinarily receive an education. This requires us all to read and get sponsored to read! The 2010 Read-a-thon raised HK$98,899 which has provided over 10,000 local language books to Room To Read schools in Asia and Africa. G2EH lead the way with 100% of students participating in the read-a-thon, and 17 students read a total of 240 books! Let’s aim for 100% participation from the whole school in 2011. The HKA Read-A-Thon promotes ‘Students Helping Students” initiatives, fostering the ideas of cultural awareness, social entrepreneurship and global philanthropy in the hearts and minds of children in the developed world. Students will learn and grow through reading, while at the same time raising money to provide resources for children in the developing world, so they may learn and grow as well. Room to Read‘s mission is to partner with local communities throughout the developing world to provide quality educational opportunities by establishing libraries, creating local language children’s literature, constructing schools and providing education to girls. Since their inception in 2000, Room to Read has impacted the lives of over 5 million children by: - Constructing 1,442 Schools - Establishing over 11,246 libraries - Publishing 550 new local language children’s titles representing over 9.4 million books in 25 languages - Funding 10,590 long-term girls’ scholarships Over this weekend AND during the two days of the parent teacher student conference our big Exhibition focus is research. Collect as much research as you can from the news, people, website and books. Remember to be selective, looking at your inquiry questions and finding the answers to them. If you think of more questions write them down too! Keep a record of this on your wiki. The Grade 5 band who rocked the assembly!

On Wednesday we will have pyjama day, Thursday poem in your pocket and a Reading Rocks casual dress day where students can come to school dressed as their favourite book character.
On Friday we were treated to a wonderful play by the grade 4 students. Many of the grade 5 students know how much hard work goes into a play after putting on the successful 'Fishy School' last year. A big congratulations to all involved!
Exhibition
Today we gave out the Exhibition booklet. Remember it is your responsibility to bring your booklet to each of the Exhibition meetings. You will also need to have your parents sign the booklet after they have looked at it. You should read the two pages at the front and the rubrics at the back. Exhibition Logos You can see our presentation from today here. This shows you some examples of the logos that we talked about. The t-shirt logo competition is due this Friday and should also be working on a group logo, although this is due when your group decide. Spellings consequences liability problematic clarification synthesis This week we have created our Central Idea and begun looking at problems and solutions. We are using S.M.A.R.T. to guide us through this process. You can stay up to date with the daily happenings of the Exhibition by visiting the Exhibition wiki.
Central Idea Communities have a right and responsibility to unite and create opportunities to make a better future. All students have been asked to write a reflection on what they may wish to focus on for the Exhibition. We will begin to finalize this process tomorrow, forming groups on Monday. Reflections should be written on blogs or hand written for tomorrow. Yesterday we spent some time enjoying each other's stories. Well done to the 5AB students for some great stories! All stories are available here online and will also be available for HKA students to read during book week on the tables outside our classroom.
